Background

This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the influence of probiotics + high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on the intensity of primary dysmenorrhea, physical fitness, and physiological parameters.

Method

Eligible participants meeting the criteria for primary dysmenorrhea were assigned to either a non-PD (control) group or one of several PD subgroups: PD only (Dysmen), PD with probiotics (DysmenPro), PD with HIIT (DysmenEx), and PD with both interventions (DysmenExPro). The intervention lasted 10 weeks and incorporated structured HIIT sessions and/or probiotic supplementation. Assessments conducted prior to and after the intervention encompassed questionnaires on menstrual and premenstrual symptoms, physical fitness tests, and biochemical analyses of blood samples to gauge hormone levels and inflammatory markers.

 

Result

HIIT substantially decreased premenstrual complaints, menstrual discomfort, and pain intensity, potentially via hormonal regulation (estradiol, prolactin, progesterone, cortisol) and anti-inflammatory effects (like reductions in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, Prostaglandin E2 [PGE2], and Prostaglandin F2 alpha [PGF2α]). Improvements in cardiovascular endurance and muscle power were also witnessed following HIIT.

In contrast, probiotics alone did not boost physical fitness but did contribute to the reduction of menstrual-linked symptoms. However, they had minimal influence on pain perception, hormone profiles, or inflammation markers. Correlations were witnessed between dysmenorrhea symptoms and both inflammatory and hormonal factors.

Conclusion

The combined use of probiotics and HIIT may serve as an effective adjunctive strategy for easing primary dysmenorrhea. This dual approach not only alleviates symptoms but may also support preventive health efforts in adolescent girls via integration into educational and wellness programs.
