This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to explore the effectiveness and safety of botulinum toxin A (BTA) injections in managing plantar fasciitis, offering a deeper understanding of its potential as a therapeutic intervention.
Injections of botulinum toxin A may offer short-term pain reduction and sustained functional improvement in patients with plantar fasciitis, with no significant adverse effects.
This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to explore the effectiveness and safety of botulinum toxin A (BTA) injections in managing plantar fasciitis, offering a deeper understanding of its potential as a therapeutic intervention.
In line with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, researchers carried out a thorough review, scouring PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for relevant studies. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included, specifically those comparing BTA injections to control treatments, with outcomes focused on pain alleviation, functional improvements, and the occurrence of adverse events. Data was systematically extracted and analyzed using Stata 16.0 software, while study quality was examined via the Cochrane Collaboration tool.
Out of an initial 655 studies identified, 7 RCTs (totaling 305 volunteers) met the inclusion criteria. When compared to control interventions, BTA injections resulted in substantial pain alleviation at the 1-month mark (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -1.72), and produced meaningful functional improvements lasting up to 12 months (SMD = 25.10). No vital differences were witnessed in the frequency of adverse events between the study groups (Odds ratio = 0.16).
BTA injections could serve as a valuable option for easing the degenerative condition of the plantar fascia. However, to solidify these findings, larger-scale, rigorously conducted RCTs are essential to refine the understanding of the ideal injection protocols and establish the most efficient dosage and site for BTA administration in plantar fasciitis management.
