A simple mask-wearing strategy for extended periods is a highly effective, non-pharmacological intervention for postinfectious cough.
A new study suggests that a simple habit—wearing a medical mask for over 8 hours a day—could be a game-changer for those struggling with postinfectious cough. Researchers found that intensive mask-wearing dramatically reduced cough severity, shortened recovery time by nearly 3 days, and cut medical costs by more than half.
Postinfectious cough is a common condition that causes discomfort and increases healthcare costs, with pharmacotherapy offering limited effectiveness. Hence, this study investigated whether intensive face mask-wearing could improve symptoms and minimize costs for the affected patients. In this randomized controlled trial, 46 people suffering from postinfectious cough were divided into:
The enrolled volunteers underwent on-site assessments or telephone follow-ups every 3 days for 3 weeks. Symptom progression was tracked via a cough evaluation test. Mask-wearing duration was documented and treatment plans were modified as needed. Baseline characteristics were similar between the groups, with no prominent differences in age, gender, disease duration, initial cough severity, or early mask-wearing habits.
However, the experimental group, which adhered to prolonged mask use, experienced remarkably greater reductions in cough severity by the 9th day, higher treatment effectiveness rates, and a shorter time to symptom improvement. Additionally, medical costs were notably lower in the experimental group, indicating that intensive mask-wearing could help reduce financial burdens associated with postinfectious cough treatment. The detailed comparison is provided in Table 1 below:
For patients struggling with lingering cough, the takeaway is simple: a mask may be more than just protection—it could be the key to faster recovery and lower medical bills. Given its high compliance rate and ease of implementation, this simple behavioral change could be a valuable addition to current management strategies for postinfectious cough.
