What's new?

Young patients with atopic dermatitis and their caregivers prioritize itch relief, prevention and clearance of lesions, and treatment safety, with notable differences in preferences based on age, role, disease severity, psychosocial concerns, and treatment convenience.

A recent web-based survey has provided valuable insights into the therapeutic goals and preferences of young people living with atopic dermatitis (AD) and their caregivers, emphasizing the importance of personalized, patient-centered care. The study published in "Journal of Dermatological Treatment" included 286 respondents, comprising children (6–11 years), adolescents (12–17 years), young adults (18–30 years), and caregivers.

Volunteers responded to a mix of multiple-choice, Likert scale, and open-ended questions, with responses analyzed on the basis of age, gender, disease severity, current treatment, visible lesions, and atopic comorbidities. Across all groups, the most highly prioritized treatment goals were relief from itching, prevention of new lesions, and complete clearance of existing lesions. When it came to treatment characteristics, high effectiveness and long-term safety ranked as the most important. However, notable differences emerged between subgroups.

Younger patients placed greater importance on treatment convenience, while caregivers prioritized both short- and long-term safety. Children and adolescents (6–17 years) also valued psychosocial outcomes—such as emotional well-being and social confidence—more than young adults. The findings further revealed that treatment goals varied by disease severity, gender, ongoing treatment, and coexisting allergic ailments. These variations highlight the need to consider individual circumstances when planning treatment.

To sum up, while reducing itch and improving skin appearance remain central goals, tailoring treatment to individual needs at different stages of life is crucial for boosting the overall quality of care in eczema.
