What's new?

Dupilumab improves psychological well-being at 52 weeks in moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, while showing sustained reductions in disease severity.

As per the findings of a Phase IV clinical study, long-term treatment with dupilumab can improve emotional functioning in moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD), although benefits are not evident in the early stages of therapy.

This open-label trial, led by Chandler E Johnson et al., prospectively assessed the emotional health of AD patients (mean age 40.4±16.2 years). The primary goal was to measure the alteration in psychological general well-being (PGWB) scores after 16 weeks of treatment, with extended follow-up to 1 year. Overall, 24 participants completed the study. At week 16, improvements in PGWB scores were witnessed but were not significant.

By week 52, patients experienced an improvement in psychological well-being, indicating that emotional benefits may require prolonged treatment duration. Clinical efficacy outcomes showed progressive and sustained improvement, with higher eczema area and severity index (EASI) reduction and greater proportions of people attaining clear or almost clear skin (investigator global assessment [IGA] 0/1) at week 52, as depicted in Table 1:

The study suggests that while dupilumab delivers early and substantial skin clearance, improvements in psychological well-being may take longer to emerge. This delayed but meaningful benefit underscores the importance of long-term treatment adherence in AD management.
