Terbinafine and itraconazole provide comparable clinical improvement in tinea cruris, significantly reducing erythema, pruritus, and scaling.
As recurrent tinea cruris continues to pose a therapeutic challenge, a comparative study suggests that terbinafine and itraconazole deliver similar clinical benefits when combined with topical 2% sertaconazole. The findings indicate that either oral antifungal regimen can effectively control the hallmark symptoms of this common dermatophyte infection.
The study enrolled 90 patients with tinea cruris, randomly allocating 45 patients to receive oral terbinafine 250 mg once daily for 4 weeks plus 2% topical sertaconazole for 8 weeks, while the remaining 45 patients received oral itraconazole 100 mg once daily for 15 days along with 2% topical sertaconazole for 8 weeks. Treatment response was evaluated across four follow-up visits using clinical scores for erythema, pruritus, and scaling.
By the fourth week, patients in both treatment groups experienced substantial improvement in all three clinical parameters. The reductions in erythema, pruritus, and scaling were highly significant within each group (p<0.001), with no difference in overall potency noted between the two antifungal regimens.
Thus, oral terbinafine and oral itraconazole are equally effective options for tinea cruris when used alongside topical 2% sertaconazole, offering clinicians flexibility in selecting antifungal therapy for this frequently recurrent superficial fungal infection.
