Oral semaglutide facilitates significant fat mass reduction and metabolic improvement in patients with obesity while preserving essential muscle strength.
Obesity remains a complex, chronic adiposity-based disease that frequently shows resistance to long-term lifestyle modifications alone. The study sought to determine real-world alteration in body weight, body composition, and muscle strength among those with obesity following treatment with oral semaglutide.
Investigators conducted an observational study involving 70 adult participants diagnosed with obesity but without diabetes. These individuals initiated oral semaglutide therapy as a component of their standard clinical care. The research team monitored changes over four-months, utilizing standardized measurements to track body composition, muscle performance, and biochemical indicators of metabolism and inflammation. Depressive symptoms were also screened using validated clinical tools.
Following four months of treatment, volunteers achieved a mean weight loss of 5.4 kg, predominantly through the reduction of fat mass and visceral adiposity. The waist circumference decreased substantially, and muscle strength remained intact despite a slight decline in lean mass. Notably, 44.3% of the cohort reached clinically meaningful weight reduction milestones. These physical outcomes were accompanied by enhanced metabolic profiles, reduced systemic inflammation, and a measurable improvement in depressive symptoms.
Oral semaglutide, even at dosages typically reserved for glycemic control, served as a potent short-term intervention for weight management in a real-world obesity cohort. The observed weight loss was characterized by high-quality tissue reduction, as muscle functional integrity remained intact while adipose stores diminished. These findings suggested that the benefits of oral glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists extended beyond metabolic regulation to include systemic anti-inflammatory and psychological improvements.
