What's new?

In older adults, vitamin K2 can help to decrease the occurrence, intensity, and duration of nighttime leg cramps without any safety concerns.

A randomized clinical trial depicted that vitamin K2 (menaquinone 7, 180 μg) supplementation dramatically lessens the frequency, severity, and persistence of nocturnal leg cramps (NLCs) in older individuals. With the goal to investigate vitamin K2 utility for tackling NLCs, this study involved community-dwelling adults (aged 65 years and older) if they experienced at least two NLC episodes within a two-week screening period.

Out of the 310 participants, 111 individuals were excluded from the study. A total of 199 eligible subjects (mean age 72.3 years) were randomly assigned to get either vitamin K2 (n=103) or a placebo (n=96) for 8 weeks.

Key findings:

  • Cramp frequency: Participants taking vitamin K2 had a considerable reduction in the average weekly number of cramps, decreasing from 2.60 to 0.96 episodes. In contrast, the placebo group exhibited no substantial improvement, maintaining an average of 3.63 episodes per week. The between-group difference (-2.67 episodes per week) was statistically significant.
  • Cramp severity: The vitamin K2 group reported a mean decrease of 2.55 points in cramp severity (on a 10-point analog scale), as opposed to a 1.24-point decrease in the placebo group.
  • Cramp duration: The duration of cramps dropped by an average of 0.90 minutes in the vitamin K2 group, while the placebo group showed only a 0.32-minute reduction.
  • Safety Profile: No adverse events linked to vitamin K2 were reported, reinforcing its safety for use in older adults.

Thus, vitamin K2 may serve as an effective and safe intervention for NLCs, a common yet often debilitating condition in older adults.
