A recent study published in "Heliyon" elucidated that utilizing the information-motivation-behavior (IMB) skills model proved successful in enhancing medication adherence, beliefs, self-efficacy,  knowledge, and outpatient care effectiveness among patients with allergic rhinitis undergoing sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). Investigators sought to validate the effectiveness of the IMB model intervention in individuals with allergic rhinitis.

This study was conducted with 120 subjects diagnosed with allergic rhinitis at an otorhinolaryngology clinic. The volunteers were segregated into 2 groups: an experimental group (n = 60) and a control group (n = 60). The control group underwent routine intervention, while the experimental group received intervention guided by the IMB model. Assessments of medication adherence, medication beliefs, self-efficacy, and medication knowledge were conducted for both groups at baseline, post-intervention, 1-month follow-up, and 3-month follow-up.

Following the intervention, 116 volunteers, evenly distributed between the experimental and control groups (58 cases in each group), successfully completed the trial. Post-intervention, at the 1-month follow-up, and the 3-month follow-up, variations in scores for medication adherence, belief, self-efficacy, and knowledge were observed between the two groups. Additionally, over time, the scores for these four indices differed between the groups, with subjects in the experimental group showing more favorable changes.

The application of IMB model interventions for SLIT in allergic rhinitis patients enhanced medication beliefs, self-efficacy, and knowledge. This improvement led to better medication adherence, ensured efficacy, and heightened the quality of outpatient medication care.
