What's new?

Pre-IVF myo-inositol supplementation may improve gonadotropin use, oocyte and embryo quality, fertilization, and pregnancy rates.

A new position statement from leading reproductive health experts, including the Experts Group on Inositol in Basic and Clinical Research and on PCOS (EGOI-PCOS), the Polish Society of Andrology, and the International Scientific Association for the Support and Development of Medical Technologies, highlights the potential benefits of myo-inositol in in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET).

Myo-inositol plays a key role in follicle-stimulating hormone signaling and glucose metabolism, making it valuable for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) care. Given its metabolic benefits, myo-inositol has been widely used to boost insulin sensitivity and minimize androgen levels in PCOS patients, many of whom struggle with infertility. Hence, this study by Artur Wdowiak and other researchers sought to investigate the clinical use of myo-inositol in improving assistive reproductive technology (ART) procedures.

Investigators carried out a narrative review based on an independent literature search, analyzing data from Google Scholar, Web of Science, and PubMed.  The new statement underscored that myo-inositol’s benefits extend beyond PCOS, with potential applications in non-PCOS infertility and even male factor infertility. Myo-inositol supplementation before ovarian stimulation was found to improve key IVF outcomes, including:

  • Reduced gonadotropin use and stimulation duration
  • Improved oocyte and embryo quality
  • Higher fertilization and clinical pregnancy success

Based on these findings, the experts recommend considering myo-inositol as a pretreatment strategy before ovarian hyperstimulation with gonadotropins in IVF patients. While further studies are needed, this statement marks a critical step toward integrating myo-inositol into routine ART protocols—potentially boosting success rates in patients.
