The analgesic effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has been widely demonstrated, although the discussion on the ways these drugs achieve such an effect is far from being settled. Many data indicate that, beyond the primary action of prostaglandin synthesis inhibition in the periphery, NSAIDs are effective also at the central level, and that their anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions can be dissociated into peripheral and central components.
