Generative AI chatbot can effectively generate clear, accurate bowel prep prompts, improving physician-patient communication in gastroenterology.
Colorectal cancer ranks as the third most frequently diagnosed cancer in the United States, with colonoscopy serving as the primary screening technique. Up to a quarter of procedures suffer from poor preparation, leading to longer times and lessened adenoma detection. This non-randomized cross-sectional study evaluated the accuracy of a ChatGPT-generated bowel preparation prompt for colonoscopy, investigating AI's role in improving patient education and communication in gastroenterology.
The perceptions of an AI-generated colonoscopy preparation prompt at a large multisite quaternary healthcare facility in the northeastern United States were assessed. All practising gastroenterologists within the health system were surveyed, with 208 providing valid email addresses for participation in the study. A Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) survey was allocated to these participants and later examined using descriptive statistics.
In total, 91% of gastroenterologists considered the prompt easy to comprehend, 95% viewed it as scientifically accurate, and 66% were comfortable providing it to their patients. Additionally, 64% of reviewers identified the ChatGPT-generated prompt successfully, but only 32% felt positive in their assessment.
ChatGPT's capability to generate an effective bowel preparation prompt demonstrated how physicians can leverage AI to enhance communication and streamline patient preparation for procedures.
