In a systematic review issued in the "Journal of Dentistry", silver diamine fluoride (SDF) emerged as a viable option for managing adult dentine hypersensitivity. The objective was to scrutinize the clinical evidences regarding the effectiveness of SDF for dentine hypersensitivity in adults. The study, conducted by a team of independent researchers, meticulously reviewed existing literature, scouring databases including Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed.

Identification of clinical trials was done that examined the desensitizing effects of professionally applied SDF in mitigating dentine hypersensitivity in adults aged 18 and above. The key endpoint assessed was the alteration in dentine hypersensitivity from baseline to follow-up visits post-SDF application, utilizing validated pain outcome measures. In accordance with Cochrane guidelines, the risk of bias assessment was executed.

From a pool of 331 studies, four were meticulously selected for inclusion, with three deemed to have a 'low risk' of bias. Results from the selected trials revealed a noteworthy reduction in dentine hypersensitivity in adults following the application of SDF solution, with percentage reductions ranging from 23% to 56% after just a single treatment. Moreover, comparative analysis showcased SDF's superiority over other conventional therapies such as potassium oxalate, potassium nitrate, and glutaraldehyde + hydroxyethyl methacrylate.

Meta-analysis further underscored SDF's efficiency, indicating a substantial drop in visual analogue scales (VAS) (1–10) by 1.35 (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 0.9–1.8; p<0.00001) compared to control groups post-application. Additional well-designed clinical trials are warranted to further investigate the usefulness of SDF in tackling dentine hypersensitivity and to yield more robust evidence regarding its usage in this context.
