Key take away

Three months of daily standardized Ferula extract supplementation (20 mg) improves menopausal symptoms, reduces oxidative stress and fat mass, and shows good tolerability in postmenopausal women.

Background

Menopausal symptoms can persist beyond the menopausal transition and substantially impact the quality of life of postmenopausal women. Interest in plant-derived supplements has escalated as women seek additional approaches to symptom management. Ferula, a genus comprising approximately 220 flowering plant species from the Apiaceae family, has a long history of traditional medicinal use, particularly its resin, which is procured mainly from the plant's stalk or root. In the present registry study, investigators evaluated standardized Ferula extract for its potential to improve menopause-linked symptoms in otherwise healthy postmenopausal women.

Method

This study was designed as a preliminary prospective, open-label pilot registry conducted over a 3-month (90-day) observation period to evaluate rapid symptom relief and physiological improvements in post-menopausal women. The participant cohort comprised otherwise healthy post-menopausal women presenting with significant residual menopausal signs and symptoms, as well as elevated baseline systemic oxidative stress.

Supplementation consisted of oral administration of Ferula extract at a standardized daily dose of one 20 mg capsule, evaluated alongside a parallel standard management control group. Clinical outcomes were assessed from baseline to day 90 and included primary menopausal symptom scores, safety parameters, adverse event monitoring, routine blood chemistry and hematology, systemic plasma oxidative stress levels, and anthropometric changes in total body fat mass.

Result

After 90 days, standardized Ferula extract supplementation was linked with better improvement in all major menopausal symptoms when compared with the other group. Oxidative stress was elevated at baseline across the study population; however, its reduction after 90 days was greater among women receiving Ferula. A greater reduction in fat mass was also witnessed with supplementation, despite the relatively short 3-month intervention period.

The supplement was well-tolerated throughout the registry. No side effects were reported, and safety and tolerability at 90 days were considered optimal. In addition, routine blood-test results remained within normal ranges at both study entry and the end of the study, providing no laboratory signal of treatment-related toxicity during the observation period.

Conclusion

Daily supplementation with 20 mg standardized Ferula extract offered a safe, well-tolerated, and effective natural strategy to boost quality of life in women navigating the menopause transition or post-menopausal phase with persistent symptoms. Beyond achieving rapid symptom relief, it delivered key physiological benefits by mitigating elevated systemic oxidative stress and promoting body fat mass reduction.
