Could the gut microbiome help explain the gut symptoms seen in children with allergic rhinitis (AR)? Novel research points to a potential connection between intestinal bacteria, amino acid metabolism, and constipation.
AR remains one of the most common chronic allergic conditions in children and is frequently accompanied by gastrointestinal complaints, including constipation. Growing evidence suggests that the gut microbiota (GM) influences both immune regulation and digestive function, yet the biological mechanisms connecting AR and constipation are still not fully understood. Hence, researchers investigated whether alterations in GM communities and fecal metabolic profiles were associated with constipation in children diagnosed with AR, with the goal of identifying potential microbial and metabolic factors involved in disease development.
The study enrolled 37 pediatric participants, including 21 children with AR and 16 children with AR complicated by constipation (ARFC group). Fecal samples were collected from all participants and analyzed using absolute quantitative 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize GM composition. In parallel, non-targeted metabolomic profiling was performed to assess changes in fecal metabolites. Correlation analyses were subsequently conducted to examine relationships between microbial abundance and metabolic alterations.
The analysis revealed distinct microbial and metabolic alterations in the ARFC group, highlighting potential biological mechanisms underlying this comorbidity.
Together, the findings suggest that constipation in children with AR may be linked with a microbiome–metabolism imbalance, rather than being an isolated gastrointestinal problem. Hungatella and indoxyl sulfate may represent potential biomarkers for identifying constipation in AR-affected children.
