Safety And Efficacy Of Oral And Transdermal Diclofenac To Manage Postoperative Pain After A Dental Implant Placement

The administration of pre or postoperative medication during dental practices has a great significance to obliterate dental pain. Diclofenac is widely used analgesic, and the study interprets that trans-dermal route of Diclofenac delivery was found to be the safer approach with similar efficacy to that of oral diclofenac in postoperative dental pain.

Introduction:

Examining the safety and effectiveness of oral and transdermal and routes of Diclofenac to manage postoperative pain among individuals going through dental implant placement.

 

Method:

Analysis selected 20 healthy, partially edentulous patients who needed dental implants bilaterally in the mandibular first molar region. An implant was arranged in the mandibular first molar region of one quadrant during the patient was under local anaesthesia. Further, an implant was set in the contralateral quadrant under local anaesthesia after a minimum of 4 weeks. Participants appointed with 50 mg of oral Diclofenac twice daily for three days, after implant placement on the first side and a 100-mg Diclofenac transdermal patch, set once daily for three days, after surgery on the contralateral side. Verbal Rating Scale, Numeric Rating Scale, and Pain Relief Scale were used to measure the postoperative pain. All patients exhibited similar intraoperative, demographic, and postoperative characteristics. Mann-Whitney test was used to analyze the three subjective scales obtained data.

 

Results:
Both delivery routes showed similar pain scores. No subject present any adverse effect while using the transdermal patch, whereas three patients informed a mild burning sensation and gastric irritation when taking oral Diclofenac.

 

Conclusion:
Both routes exhibited similar efficacy, but the safety profiles were better with the transdermal route. Additional analyses with larger patient samples are required.
