Key take away

Photobiomodulation eases pain and improves oral health-linked quality of life in people with dentin hypersensitivity after scaling and root planing.

Background

This randomized clinical trial sought to evaluate whether photobiomodulation (PBM) can alleviate dentin hypersensitivity.

Method

In total, 112 patients with dentin hypersensitivity following non-surgical scaling and root planing were randomly divided into:

  • Experimental group: Received SRP + PBM (660 nm, 1.061 J/cm²)
  • Control group: Received SRP + PBM simulation

Dentin hypersensitivity was assessed via tactile and thermal stimulation using the visual analog scale (VAS) after 7 days (primary endpoint). Additionally, paracetamol was provided as necessary and quantified. With the help of Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire, the effect of oral health on the participants' quality of life was explored. Outcome measures were assessed at both 7 days and 1 month post-treatment.

Result

At both the 7-day and 30-day marks, the experimental group reported considerably lower pain levels when compared to the control group. No differences in analgesic consumption were witnessed between the two groups. Furthermore, the experimental group showed a marked improvement in oral health-linked quality of life, as evidenced by lower OHIP-14 scores at all time points, with a significant decrease at the 30-day assessment.

Conclusion

PBM successfully reduced discomfort associated with dentin hypersensitivity following scaling and root planing, with lasting effects observed at both 7 and 30 days. Moreover, it also promoted a better quality of life linked to oral health.
