Migraine headache is a recurring neurological disorder often accompanied by nausea, light and sound sensitivity, while triptans offer fast symptom relief.
Triptans provide targeted migraine treatment, with specific therapies suited for diverse needs—frovatriptan prevents recurrence, naratriptan is ideal for menstrual migraines, and eletriptan/zolmitriptan deliver fast relief for acute episodes.
Migraine headache is a recurring neurological disorder often accompanied by nausea, light and sound sensitivity, while triptans offer fast symptom relief. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of triptans in treating migraines, emphasizing their role in symptom management and improving the quality of life of the patients.
A thorough review of current literature was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Relevant studies were selected through a systematic search based on the associated keywords.
Research consistently supports the high efficacy of triptans in alleviating acute migraine symptoms, including pain, nausea, photophobia (sensitivity to light), and phonophobia (fear of loud noise). The inception speed and half-life of different triptans impact their duration of action and the probability of headache recurrence.
Frovatriptan, with its extended half-life, was mainly effective in averting migraine recurrence, while rizatriptan offered swift migraine relief due to its known rapid onset. Clinical trials indicate that all triptans have favorable safety profiles, with mild side effects reported.
Triptans are effective, safe, and essential for acute migraine management. Future research is needed to refine triptan therapy, reducing recurrence, and improving tolerability.
