Infants who consume synbiotic-supplemented organic formula have softer stools, increased bowel movement frequency, and reduced bloating and burping—mirroring the gastrointestinal benefits seen in breastfed infants.
According to the findings of a trial led by Xiaoyang Sheng et al., an organic infant formula enriched with synbiotics—specifically Bifidobacterium animalis subspecies lactis BB-12® and prebiotics DiGenix®—may support healthier digestion and gut function in infants, offering a promising alternative to breastfeeding.
This randomized controlled trial involved 75 healthy, full-term infants aged 30 to 120 days. Participants were evenly divided into 3 groups: exclusively breastfed, fed with a standard organic cow’s milk-based formula, or fed with the same organic formula enhanced with BB-12® and DiGenix®. Over 4 pediatric follow-up visits—conducted at 30, 60, 90, and 120 days prior to the introduction of solid foods—researchers monitored gastrointestinal health, growth parameters, sleep patterns, and tolerance.
Key findings:
This trial is among the first to compare a synbiotic-enriched organic formula with both breastfeeding and standard organic formula. The inclusion of BB-12®—a well-researched probiotic—and DiGenix® prebiotics appears to promote a gut microbiota profile more aligned with that of breastfed infants. As parents increasingly seek natural and science-backed options for infant nutrition, this study provides reassuring evidence that advanced organic formulas can deliver tangible health benefits—commencing in the earliest days of life.
