What's new?

The validated Mind the Gap questionnaire identifies essential environmental enhancements required to optimize the transition from paediatric to adult care for adolescents living with IBD.

The transition from paediatric to adult healthcare is identified as a high-stakes period for patients living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To better understand this journey, a research team led by Dr. Valeria Dipasquale conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional service evaluation at a paediatric tertiary IBD centre to assess how adolescents and their parents perceived the quality of transitional care.

The study utilized the "Mind the Gap" questionnaire, a specialized tool designed to measure the discrepancy between a patient's expectations of "best care" and their actual perceptions of "current care".

The evaluation focused on three primary domains:

  • Management of the environment
  • Provider characteristics
  • Process of care

Gap scores were measured on a scale from -7 (most satisfied) to 7 (least satisfied). The research saw participation from 25 adolescents (a 71.4% response rate) and 35 parents (a 100% response rate). While the results indicated that adolescents maintained a moderate level of overall satisfaction across all domains, parents provided a more nuanced perspective.

The data revealed that parents were most dissatisfied with the "management of the environment" (mean score of 1.16) but expressed the highest satisfaction regarding "provider characteristics" (mean score of 0.41). Statistical analysis confirmed that there were no significant differences between the overall gap scores of adolescents and those of their parents. Furthermore, the study demonstrated high reliability for the scale, with Cronbach’s alpha scores of 0.883 for adolescents and 0.922 for parents.
