Fortified yogurt may ease depression in women with PCOS

Daily fortified yogurt intake may improve depression symptoms but not sleep quality in PCOS.

A randomized controlled trial led by Moein Askarpour et al. has shed light on the potential benefits of functional foods in managing psychological symptoms associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The study found that daily intake of yogurt fortified with probiotics, vitamin E, and vitamin D remarkably improved depression symptoms in women with PCOS—though it had no notable effect on sleep quality.

The goal of this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was to investigate the impact of a novel fortified dairy product on the mental health struggles and sleep quality in 90 women with clinically diagnosed PCOS. Following a 2-week run-in period to stabilize participants’ dietary and lifestyle habits, the volunteers were randomly assigned to one of the two groups:

  • Intervention group (n=45): Treated with 150 g/day of low-fat yogurt enriched with 10⁶ colony-forming units per gram of two probiotic strains—Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 and Bifidobacterium animalis Bb-12—alongside 50 international units (IU) of vitamin E and 1,000 IU of vitamin D.
  • Control group (n=45): Received an identical quantity of plain low-fat yogurt without any added nutrients.

Participants continued the regimen for 8 weeks. Throughout the trial, their psychological and sleep profiles were evaluated via two widely accepted instruments: the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 Items (DASS-21) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). After 8 weeks, the results revealed a remarkable improvement in depression symptoms among those in the fortified yogurt group when compared to the placebo group (P=0.01). This suggests that the combined intake of specific probiotics with vitamins E and D may support emotional well-being in PCOS sufferers.

However, when it came to sleep quality—often compromised in PCOS—no pivotal difference was observed between the two groups (P=0.44). These findings indicate that while the nutritional intervention may help with mood regulation, its effect on sleep may be limited or may require additional components or a longer duration to manifest. This trial adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of functional foods as a complementary approach in tackling the complex spectrum of symptoms linked with PCOS.
