Can’t miss: Weighty impact of obesity on rheumatic conditions

Obesity Obesity

What's new?

Overweight and obesity amplify the challenges of living with rheumatic conditions, making treatment more difficult.

Obesity or excessive body fat is an emerging health crisis, impacting individuals with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). Approximately 70% of adults with joint and bone disorders struggle with obesity or being overweight, and the consequences are far-reaching. Beyond increasing the risk of developing these conditions, obesity exacerbates associated pain, fatigue, and inflammation, impairing treatment responses and severely diminishing quality of life.

The dangers don’t stop there. Obesity exacerbates common comorbidities linked to RMDs, such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and liver disease, creating a vicious cycle of declining health. On the flip side, RMDs make it increasingly difficult for patients to stay active or maintain a healthy weight, especially in an environment that promotes unhealthy lifestyles.

This dynamic underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to treatment. Researchers are calling for more robust clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of new obesity medications, either as standalone therapies or in combination with current treatments for RMDs. Such efforts could pave the way for a more holistic care model, addressing both the physical and metabolic challenges faced by patients, and ultimately improving their overall well-being.
