Safe and Effective First-line Treatment of Acute Gout's With Steroid Pills

In accordance to a clinical trial published in Annals of Internal Medicine, an oral steroid which was used for improvement of pain in acute gout's patients, it showed similar effectiveness to an oral NSAIDs.

Double-blinded randomized trials revealed that for gout, both oral steroids and oral NSAIDs have the same effectiveness to lessen the pain, but the sample size of these trials were small and had other methodological shortcomings. In a multicenter, randomized and double blinded clinical trial, the safety and effec tiveness of oral prednisolone versus oral indomethacine were compared in 416 adult patients with acute gout. During treatment, patients were administered with either prednisolone or indomethacine. Its result demonstrated that both treatment groups got relief from the pain without any serious adverse events. Researchers deduced that first-line treatment with oral steroids are a safe as well as effective for patients with acute gout.
