Relationship between Vitamin D Concentration and Pain

A recent research published in Public Health Nutrition Journal revealed a significant relationship between low 25(OH)D concentrations and pain conditions.

Pain-related states, such as chronic widespread pain and fibromyalgia have become a great difficulity for individuals as well as the health system. The existing data on the association between circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations and pain is contradictory. Thus, Wu Z and colleagues conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis study to determine the relationship between mean 25(OH)D concentration (primary aim), or proportion of hypovitaminosis D (secondary goal), and pain conditions.

The studies for inclusion were systematically explored from electronic mediums (MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) and a random-effects meta-analysis was carried on included searches.

A total of 81 observational studies with 50834 participants were recognized. The mean 25(OH)D concentration was found to be significantly lower in subjects with arthritis, muscle pain and chronic widespread pain. The odds of vitamin D deficiency was increased for arthritis, muscle pain and widespread chronic pain, but not for headache or migraine, compared with controls. Similar results were shown by sensitivity analyses.

Overall results show that low Vitamin D levels are associated with pain conditions.
