Plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor as a significant diagnostic bio-markers for endometriosis

A recent finding has suggested that plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) could be useful as a diagnostic biomarker for endometriosis.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a kind of protein present in serum, blood, and plasma in specific amounts. These proteins levels can be used as potential biomarkers for certain disorders. One of such disorder is endometriosis, a chronic, painful condition which involves pelvic pain (during periods), pain during bowel movements and urination. Scientists have also found certain evidence of plasma BDNF association with uterine infections. As endometriosis is only diagnosed with the help of laparoscopy, which is an invasive procedure, diagnosis of endometriosis through plasma BDNF would be very beneficial.

A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted to test whether plasma BDNF levels are useful in predicting the appearance of endometriosis in women with pelvic pain.

A total of 67 women included in the study aged from 24-49 years. The plasma samples of the patients for BDNF were analyzed using a commercial enzyme immunoassay. Females, who suffered from an ovarian endometrioma had higher levels of plasma BDNF as compared to women with other benign ovarian tumors (p=0.02). The levels of Plasma BDNF were also associated with the severity of pelvic pain (p<0.0001). Although, these levels were not significant to indicate the presence of peritoneal or deep infiltrating endometriosis.

Therefore, it was found that plasma BDNF could be useful as a diagnostic biomarker for endometriosis, but only in the case of ovarian endometriosis and may not be useful in other forms of endometriosis.
