Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool: A Novel and Useful Tool for Predicting Osteoporosis

Research conducted at the National University of Malaysia by Shaanthana Subramaniam and colleagues found the osteoporosis self-assessment tool (OST) to be economical and simple to predict osteoporosis and may help to improve the use of Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

The screening of Bone health is important for the timely diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis to prevent fragility fractures among the elderly and high-risk individuals. DXA is considered as a gold standard to detect bone mineral density and thus osteoporosis. However, it is not suitable tool for screening of osteoporosis. The present review aimed to summarize and compare the performance of OST in assessing osteoporosis risk among the Asian and non-Asian population.

The literature search was carried out from 15 January to 4 April 2018 to determine the role of Osteoporosis Self-assessment Tool (OST) in osteoporosis screening. OST is the first assessment tool to determine osteoporosis among postmenopausal females. The performance of OST was evaluated among various Asian and Non-Asian population, and the tool depicted satisfactory results with regards to area under curve (AUC), specificity and sensitivity. OST can successfully recognize the indivuduals at high risk of osteoporosis; however, the performance of OST may differ as per age, gender and ethnicity. Overall, OST is a useful osteoporosis-screening tool that allows early disease detection, improves the use of the diagnostic facility, and hence reduces the disease burden of osteoporosis.
