Flurbiprofen spray found to offer significant relief from sore throat due to upper respiratory tract infection

A recent study undertaken by Looze F and colleagues showed that flurbiprofen spray offered significant relief from sore throat due to upper respiratory tract infection. Flurbiprofen is an anti-inflammatory drug.

This was a randomised, double-blind study and included patients with a moderate or a severe sore throat caused by an upper respiratory tract infection. The study participants were divided into two groups as Flurbiprofen 8.75 mg with 249 participants and placebo spray with 256 participants.

The participants were administered with a single dose of the drug given as either a throat spray or lozenge, and throat pain was evaluated for the next 2 hours. Sore Throat Relief Rating Scale was used to assess the Pain relief. Flurbiprofen spray provided significantly greater relief than placebo from 20 min to 6 h (p< 0.0001) with a maximum difference of 75 minutes. It was observed that on the Sore Throat Scale the severity of Sore throat was reduced ≥-2.2 from 75 min to 6 h, indicating meaningful relief. Moreover, the patients taking Flurbiprofen spray reported ≥30 min of ‘at least moderate' relief versus placebo over 6 h (p< 0.0001). Most adverse events reported were mild.

Overall, it can be concluded that Flurbiprofen spray provides rapid, long-lasting and clinically meaningful relief from a sore throat (ANZCTR: ACTRN12612000457842). Also, the study found that both spray and lozenge were useful for reducing throat pain, with no difference noted between them.
