Cognitive Performance and the Modification of Neuroendocrine Hormones in Chronic Tension-Type Headache

Researchers have revealed that patients suffering from migraine often have cognitive impairment, but only a few studies have concentrated on the cognition in patients with chronic tension-type headache (CTTH). Chronic Tension-Type Headache is the most intractable form of a headache with the high socio-economic burden.

Lan Xia et al. assumed that patients with CTTH could have cognitive impairments, which are regulated by the neuroendocrine state. In this study, patients with CTTH and healthy controls were recruited. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment and the Nine Box Maze Test were employed to evaluate the cognitive ability. Neuroendocrine hormones were administrated and established were found to be associated with cognitive performance. The hormonal changes in the hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal axis, the hypothalamus–pituitary–thyroid axis, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone were also detected.

The results showed that significant cognitive impairment and neuroendocrine dysfunction were also present in the patients with CTTH when compared with control. The correlations were also assessed between the neuroendocrine hormones and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score. A 17-term Hamilton's Depression Scale score, pain intensity, and duration of pain were also demonstrated to study whether the neuroendocrine hormones had any relation to the symptoms of CTTH.

It was concluded from results that changes in neuroendocrine hormones were involved in the symptoms of CTTH and any interventions within the neuroendocrine hormones could account for CTTH treatment.
