Chronic Pain Treatment using Hyperbaric Oxygen

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or tube. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment providing 100% oxygen at a pressure greater than that at sea level. HBOT is becoming increasingly recognized as a potential treatment modality for a broad range of ailments, including chronic pain.

The understanding of pathophysiology of nociceptive, inflammatory and neuropathic pain addressed the mechanisms by which HBOT may ameliorate the different types of pain. Many clinical studies also suggested that HBOT may be a useful option in treating the various chronic pain syndromes which also included chronic headache, fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome and trigeminal neuralgia.

A comprehensive search was also done using MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science to evaluate the results after the completion of studies related to HBOT. Various keywords were used to describe pain like hyperbaric oxygen therapy or treatment, nociceptive pain, inflammatory pain, neuropathic pain, HBOT AND pain, HBOT AND headache, HBOT AND fibromyalgia, HBOT AND complex regional pain syndrome and HBOT AND trigeminal neuralgia.

Even early clinical research indicated that HBOT had also useful in modulating the pain. HBOT has shown effective results in both animals or humans. But still further studies are required to determine whether HBOT is a safe and efficacious treatment modality for chronic pain conditions.
