Chair yoga as a go-to treatment for osteoarthritis patients

Researchers at Florida Atlantic University shed light on chair yoga as an effective treatment for OA patients. Many older people with significant hip, knee or ankle pain from arthritis might be reluctant to try yoga. Chair Yoga is quickly becoming a preferred method of relieving, aches and pains due to arthritis. Chair yoga is one of the most gentle form of the exercise that can be performed by sitting on a chair or standing up, using the chair as a support. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease affecting the joints by causing inflammation, pain and limited movement.

Chair Yoga has been proven to be beneficial in helping lessen the pain associated with arthritis. It also allows them to exercise more comfortably despite their physical limitations or disabilities.

Researchers randomly assigned 131 older patients with hip, knee, foot or ankle arthritis. They were divided into two groups, Group 1 offered chair yoga sessions twice a week for eight weeks and Group 2 were offered health education sessions to serve as a control group. Both types of sessions lasted 45 minutes each. Researchers measured the pain, pain interference (how it affects one’s life), balance, walking speed, fatigue, and functional ability, before, during and after the sessions.

Results showed that participants in the chair yoga group had a greater decrease in fatigue, pain, gait and pain interference. They also had a greater improvement in their walking speed compared to the control group.

Chair yoga should be further explored as a non-pharmacologic intervention for older people with osteoarthritis. According to experts, this could provide a different option to help alleviate pain in sufferers.
