Ankle Fusion with Ilizarov Fixation and Internal Fixation found Effective in the treatment of Ankle Arthritis

According to a recent study conducted by Piotr Morasiewicz and colleagues, the ankle arthritis can be effectively managed by ankle fusion with internal and Ilizarov fixation.

Ankle arthritis is a significant issue causing pain and functional disability. However, what effect the type of ankle joint arthrodesis stabilization puts on a player's physical and sports activity levels is still not known.

The present analysis was conducted at the Orthopedic clinic of Wroclaw Medical University, Poland to determine ankle fusion effects. 47 patients were categorized into two groups; the Ilizarov external fixation stabilization and internal stabilization with screws. The first group contained 21 and the second group comprised 26 patients. The GRIMBY scale, VAS (visual analogue scale) ACTIVITY scale, LOWER LIMB Activity scale, FAAM (foot and ankle ability measure) SPORT scale, and UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) activity scale was used to assess physical and sports activity among the patients of both treatment groups.

The GRIMBY and LOWER LIMB Activity scale exhibited no significant differences before and after the surgery between both group one and two. The means scores on FAAM SPORT scale, UCLA, VAS activity scale were higher in group one as compared to group two after the treatment. The outcomes indicated that the patients treated with Ilizarov fixation exhibited better VAS, UCLA, and FAAM sport scales scores after the operation. Both groups showed satisfactory physical and sports activity, but the llizarov appears to have better effects as compared to internal stabilization.
