Acupuncture's 20 Minutes for 9-Weeks can Alleviate Chronic Pain in Fibromyalgia Sufferers

A recent study revealed that fibromyalgia have an effect on one in 20 people. This disorder is characterized by fatigue, pain, depression and disturbedb sleep. Only nine weeks visits of acupuncture, each lasting 20 minutes may drop the chronic pain of fibromyalgia. Researchers claim that tailored acupuncture reduces pain and ameliorate funtionality, quality of life.

A paper published in the Acupuncture in Medicine and researchers wrote that, "The treatment produced an improvement in the participants' condition reflected by a reduction in pain intensity and enhanced functional capacity and quality of life after the intervention and during the follow up period."

Around 90% of people must follow a complementary therapy such as massage, hydrotherapy and acupuncture to relieve from the intense pain of Fibromyalgia. To determine which personalized approach out of "Tailored" or "Sham" acupuncture would be better in pain reduction, investigators compared both treatments in 153 adults. In this study, participants were randomly assigned in the real and simulated treatments and provided nine weeks visits of acupuncture for 20 minutes..

After 10 weeks of treatment results exhibited that intensity of perceived pain was lowest in real acupuncture than simulated acupuncture. In real acupuncture, pain score reduced to 41% and 27% in simulated acupuncture. Significant differences were still observed a year after treatment, with an average fall of 20% in pain intensity in people who had undergone acupuncture as compared to a 6% fall in simulated treatment.

A few and mild side effects were noticed in tailored acupuncture treatment but the researchers postulates tailored acupuncture can be a viable pain relief treatment for patients with fibromyalgia.
