Weight Loss May Relief From Knee Cartilage, Study Finds

A new study showed that obese people can spare themselves from the loss of knee cartilage by cutting calories and lose weight. Nowadays, obesity is one of the major public health problem and it is perilous factor for the development of knee osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that usually leads to joint replacement surgery.

A study consisting of 500 or more overweight and obese Americans patients who either had mild to moderate osteoarthritis or at a risk of osteoarthritis was carried out. Patients were randomly assigned to control groups including participants who lost no weight, lost a little weight or a group that lost more than 10 percent of their body weight.

In accordance with study presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, in Chicago, USA, revealed with the aid of four years follow up that more protection had been noticed from the detrimental knee osteoarthritis due to significant weight loss which protected against cartilage degeneration and that larger amounts of weight loss. This research which was presented at meetings is considered as preliminary till published in a peer-reviewed journal.

According to Dr. Alexandra Gersing, from the department of radiology and biomedical imaging at the University of California, San Francisco “Cartilage degenerated a lot slower in the group that lost more than 10 percent of their body weight, especially in the weight-bearing regions of the knee." He said “However, those with 5-10 percent weight loss had almost no difference in cartilage degeneration compared to those who didn’t lose weight."

Significant weight loss not only slows the loss of knee joint cartilage, but it also reduces the risk of osteoarthritis. Along with moderate exercise, weight loss is one of the best ways to prevent the disease, Gersing said. “It’s most helpful if these lifestyle interventions take place as early as possible,” she said.
