An Update on the Useful Treatment Options for Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia can be effectively managed by including medications like Carbamazepine, Lidocaine and Botulinum toxin type A in the treatment regimen, confirms a recent network meta-analysis conducted by Yang and colleagues.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a devastating neuropathic pain condition that negatively affects the quality of life of the person suffering from it. Heretofore, no particular treatment approach exists to treat this neuropathic condition. On this account, yang and colleagues examined the potency of 8 medicines (Oxcarbazepine (OXC), Carbamazepine (CBZ), Lamotrigine (LTG), Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A), Proparacaine (PPC), Lidocaine (LDC), Pimozide (PIM) and Tizanidine) for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia.

The data for analysis was extracted from search engines like Embase electronic databases and PubMed. A total of 672 patients were selected from 13 studies. Results were evaluated via the network and pairwise meta-analysis. The response rate and study's only outcome was measured through odd ratios. Further, the efficacy of all the eight drugs was ranked by using surface under cumulative ranking curves. The reliability between direct and indirect evidence was also evaluated through heat plot and node splitting.

Out of all eight treatments, only CBZ, LDC and BTX-A response rate exhibit higher efficacy as per surface under cumulative ranking curves. In addition, these three drugs express better response rate than placebo. Besides two drugs  PPC and  PIM, other drugs OXC, LTG and Tizanidine show better results than placebo but CBZ, LDC and BTX-A demonstrated higher performance. On account of the results, researchers suggested CBZ, LDC, and BTX-A for TN treatment.
