Triptans for the management of Migraine

Nowadays, migraine is a common problem which attacks with severe and excruciating painful headache which can last for hours or even days. Fortuntately, migraine sufferers can prevent its attack by properly recognizing the warning signs and symptoms. NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), over-the-counter (OTC) analgesics, prescription analgesics and triptans are the different medications, available for the treatment of acute migraine. However, triptans are considered as the gold standard treatment for migraine from the last quarter of a century due to its potential clinical applications.

In order to gather information about the effective intervention, researchers have assessed patient and attack profiles that involved "5-Ps": pattern, phenotype, patient, pharmacology and precipitants and these components assisted in developing individualized behavioral, pharmacological and nonpharmacological comprehensive treatment plan for most migraine sufferers.

Additionally, this article emphasis on Frovatriptan, which is a novel triptan with a unique molecular signature and has potential clinical applications. Among the currently available triptans, it is approved for acute treatment of migraine, but its role in several unique migraine phenotypes is unknown. Frovatriptan is unique with long half-life which is often promoted for acute migraine treatment of longer duration and in particular, Fravotriptan in menstrual-related migraine (MRM) was also studied as short-term preventive treatment. It was found that about 60% of female migraine patients suffering from MRM has led to the initiation of studies of frovatriptan for the short-term prevention of MRM.

A small pilot studies were also conducted to explore the use of frovatriptan for the treatment of migraine based on premonitory symptoms for the prevention of headache phase of migraine. Thus, by identifying and evaluating the patient and attack profiles, clinicians may effectively determine that frovatriptan presents a safe and viable option to treatment for migraineurs.
