Pulsed Nd:YAG laser technique is proven to be effective in knee osteoarthritis

When the flexible tissues at the ends of bones gradually deteriorate, knee osteoarthritis is suspected.  Alayat M S M, et. al., investigated the effects of pulsed Nd: YAG laser plus glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate (GCS) in patients with knee osteoarthritis. This was performed by examining the changes in the pain and knee function, as well as synovial thickness (ST) and femoral cartilage thickness (FCT).

A total of 67 male patients were included in the study, with a mean (SD) age of 53.85 (4.39) years, weight of 84.01 (4.70) kg, height of 171.51 (3.96) cm, and body mass index (BMI) of 28.56 (1.22). High-intensity laser therapy (HILT), GCS, and exercises (HILT + GCS + EX) were the treatment options for group1. As for group 2, GCS plus exercises (GCS + EX), and group 3 received placebo laser plus exercises (PL + EX) were the treatment options. The visual analog scale (VAS) and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) were used to monitor the pain level and functional disability in these groups. Ultrasound examination depicted the ST and FCT. The differences between baseline and after 6 weeks of treatment and then after 3 months of follow-up was significant (p< 0.05). After 6 weeks, VAS  and WOMAC were significantly decreased in all groups, with non-significant differences between 6 weeks and 3 months of follow-up. A notable decline was observed in ST in the HILT + GCS + EX group posttreatment, with nonsignificant decreases in the GCS + EX and PL + EX groups, plus nonsignificant differences to FCT in all groups.

Overall, it was demonstrated that pulsed Nd:YAG laser plus GCS and exercises is more effective than GCS + EX and exercises alone in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis patients.
