Is melatonin effective for preventing headache disorders

Migraine is a neurological condition that may be caused by imbalance in brain chemicals. These can be triggered by a variety of things. Getting too much sleep or not enough sleep may trigger migraine in some people. For some people, migraines can be a debilitating chronic health condition.

There are several prescription drugs available that can treat migraines effectively. Out of them, melatonin is one of the newest all natural treatments. It is most commonly used as a natural sleep aid and has many health benefits.

A study was conducted, which included many randomized placebo-controlled trials related to the role of melatonin in the primary headache disorders treatment. The researchers examined the melatonin for preventive treatment of migraine and cluster headache. A randomized placebo-controlled trial of melatonin 3 mg (immediate release) was positive for migraine, nevertheless an underpowered trial of melatonin 2 mg (sustained release) was negative. For cluster headache, melatonin 10 mg was superior to placebo.

There is growing evidence that headaches disorders are connected with melatonin secretion and pineal function. This study shows promising results in terms of headache frequency reduction. However, more research on melatonin as a treatment for migraines is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of benefit of melatonin in different headache disorders as well as clarifying optimal dosing and formulation.
