Glucosamine plus Chondroitin as effective for knee osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage on the ends of the joints wears down and the exposed bones rub together. This degenerative process causes excess friction in the joints, which leads to loss of motion, stiffness and joint pain. In this context, several studies have investigated the ability of glucosamine and cchondroitin to improve the symptoms (pain and function).

A recent study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness and safety of glucosamine, chondroitin in combination or celecoxib in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. A systematic search was performed in Cochrane Library, Pub Med and Embase that are associated with OA to extract concerned randomized controlled trials and interventions conducted till February 2015. Overall, this study included 54 studies covering 16427 knee OA patients.

Significant improvement in functionality and reduction in pain were seen in patients who received glucosamine plus chondroitin as compared to the placebo group. Moreover, clinically significant improvement from baseline pain and function were noticed with this combination group. In terms of the structure-modifying effect, glucosamine, chondroitin, or the two in combination, remains unknown due to the lack of evidence. According to the additional classical meta-analysis that celecoxib exhibited a higher rate of GI adverse effect comparing with placebo.

All in all, glucosamine plus chondroitin have shown positive effects on symptomatic efficacy of knee OA and have comparable efficacy over celecoxib in pain relief and function improvement. Although no significant difference was observed among the five treatment options with respect to the three major adverse effects.
